Steel & Sky
Inspect every beam. Miss nothing. · Operation IRONWORK · 3 days suggested (1–7)
A steel frame is going up fast. The inspector needs eyes on the high connections today. Construction teams use drones to check progress, inspect hard-to-reach connections and document the site without putting a person on a lift. Your crew will fly a close inspection route through the frame and capture each checkpoint.
- ◆ I can fly a precise route between obstacles at a constant height.
- ◆ I can hold position at an inspection point long enough to collect data.
- ◆ I can explain why sites restrict drone flights near cranes and workers.
- Pilot: Flies the inspection route and calls each checkpoint.
- Mission Commander: Holds the inspection checklist and confirms each point is captured.
- Engineer / Safety Observer: Keeps the crane zone clear, watches the battery and calls STOP if needed.
Simulator challenges
Take off, hold a level 1 m hover for 3 seconds, and land on the site-office pad.
Fly it →Weave through the steel frame, hold at each beam connection until the inspection photo is captured, avoid the crane zone, and land at the site office.
Fly it →Fly the frame gates in order — over the rebar, under the beam, around the column — and land on the office pad.
Fly it →Program a square inspection loop around a column using a repeat block: four sides, a pause at each corner, and a landing back on the pad.
Fly it →Fly through a 'steel frame' opening made from two chairs and a pool noodle, hover at the far side, and land on the office pad.
- ☐ Lined up and called the pass before flying through
- ☐ Clean pass with no contact
- ☐ Stayed out of the crane zone
- ☐ Landed on the pad
Export your Square Inspection Loop and fly it on a real CoDrone EDU around a taped column marker.
- ☐ Crew reviewed the code line by line before flight
- ☐ Used a loop instead of copy-pasting
- ☐ Measured and explained drift
- ☐ Pilot ready to take over the whole flight
Inspection camera (simulated): Holding at a connection captures an inspection photo in the simulation. Real CoDrone EDU: CoDrone EDU has no camera. In class, crews hover at marked points and the observer records what they see on a checklist.
You documented every connection without sending anyone up a lift, and you kept the crane zone clear. That's exactly why construction companies employ drone inspectors.
